Significance
Yagyopaveet, the sacred thread ceremony, installs the principles of Indian culture in a young person and is a pledge to lead a disciplined, dignified and purposeful life. It is said to give a person "new birth" โ dwijatva โ the birth of conscience and character.
It marks the beginning of conscious self-discipline: regular Sandhya and Gayatri upasana, control of the senses, respect for elders and teachers, and dedication to learning and service. Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya emphasised this sanskar for all youth, of every gender, as the foundation of a noble personality.
