Special Items by Sanskar

Every sanskar uses the core yajna samagri below, plus a few specific items:

  • New clothes for the one receiving the sanskar
  • Namkaran: honey, a gold/silver item to write the name, fruits
  • Mundan: razor & bowl, turmeric paste
  • Yagyopaveet: janeu (sacred thread), danda, bhiksha items
  • Vidyarambha: slate & chalk or pen, books
  • Vivah / Vivah Divas: garlands, mangalsutra, sacred fire setup

For the Sacred Fire

  • Havan kund (copper/iron) or a clean vedi with sand
  • Mango-wood samidha & dry cow-dung cakes (kande)
  • Havan samagri โ€” herbal mixture (jau, til, rice, sandal, dry herbs)
  • Pure cow's ghee (gau ghrit)
  • Camphor (kapur) & a matchbox
  • Sruva / spoon for offering ahuti

For Worship (Pujan)

  • Kalash (copper/brass) with water, mango leaves & coconut
  • Roli, kumkum, haldi, chandan & akshat (unbroken rice)
  • Moli / kalava (sacred thread)
  • Akhand deepak, cotton wicks & oil/ghee
  • Dhoop, agarbatti, flowers & a garland
  • Paan, supari, laung, elaichi & Gangajal

  • Panchamrit โ€” milk, curd, ghee, honey & sugar
  • Fruits & sweets for naivedya (prasad)
  • Image / idol of the Ishta Devata (Gayatri Mata)

  • Thali, small katori bowls & a clean red/yellow altar cloth
